Licensing, and how to check it

CobraScout publishes information and connects calls. We are not an insurance agency and we hold no license. The people who give you advice must — and here is how to confirm it yourself.

Who needs a license, and who does not

CobraScout does not sell insurance and holds no insurance license. We do not need one, because we do not sell, solicit or negotiate coverage — we publish information and connect callers by phone. Nobody here will discuss specific policy terms, benefits or premiums with you, and that is deliberate.

The people you actually speak to are different. Anyone who recommends a specific plan to you must hold a state insurance producer license. Your call is connected to Clearline Health Insurance (National Producer Number 19024830), a licensed insurance agency.

You should not have to take our word for that — or anyone else's. Every state publishes a free licensee lookup, and every licensed agent has a National Producer Number you can check independently. Below is exactly how.
The agency that answers is Clearline Health Insurance, National Producer Number 19024830. You do not have to ask us for that and you do not have to take it on trust. Put the number into the National Insurance Producer Registry at nipr.com and it will tell you what we have just told you. If it ever does not, we would want to know before you did.

How to verify any agent, in about a minute

  1. Ask for their full name and National Producer Number. A licensed agent will give you both without hesitating. Hesitation is itself an answer.
  2. Check the NPN through the National Insurance Producer Registry at nipr.com, which is the industry's central licensing database.
  3. Check your own state's insurance department — every one publishes a licensee lookup showing whether that person is currently licensed in your state, which lines of authority they hold, and whether there is any disciplinary history.
  4. Confirm the line of authority. Someone licensed for life insurance is not thereby licensed for health. The lookup shows this.
Two things worth knowing. A license is state-specific — an agent licensed in one state may not be licensed in yours. And a license proves someone is authorized to sell, not that a particular plan is right for you. It is a floor, not a recommendation.

What we will never do

  • Claim to be licensed, or to be an insurance agency.
  • Discuss specific policy terms, benefits or premiums with you ourselves.
  • Publish a license number we cannot substantiate.
  • Tell you a plan is right for you. Only a licensed agent can do that, and we are not one.

If anything on this site reads as though we are giving you a recommendation rather than an explanation, that is an error and we would like to know — see our corrections policy.

Common questions

Is CobraScout licensed to sell insurance?

No, and it does not need to be. CobraScout publishes information and connects callers to a licensed agency. We do not sell, solicit or negotiate insurance, and we do not discuss specific policy terms, benefits or premiums.

Who am I actually speaking to?

Clearline Health Insurance, National Producer Number 19024830 — check it yourself at nipr.com. Ask the individual agent for their own name and NPN at the start of the call as well: licenses are state-specific, and an agency holding one does not tell you whether the person on the phone is licensed where you live.

How do I verify a license myself?

Check the National Producer Number through the National Insurance Producer Registry at nipr.com, and check your own state insurance department's licensee lookup. Both are free and take about a minute.

Does a license mean the advice is good?

No. It means the person is authorized to sell insurance in that state and has met the state's requirements. It is a floor, not a guarantee — and it is worth checking anyway, because plenty of operations in this industry cannot clear it.

Is the agent licensed in my state?

Licenses are state-specific, so ask directly and verify through your own state's lookup rather than a national claim.

Talk it through with a licensed agent

Which option is right depends on your state, your income and which doctors you need to keep. A licensed agent can walk through it with you in about eight minutes.
