The federal dates

For most of the country, Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1; enroll after that and coverage generally begins February 1.

Nine jurisdictions do not follow that schedule, and this is where national articles get people into trouble. Idaho opens on October 15 and closes on December 15 — no February start is available there at all. Rhode Island closes on December 31, the only year-end deadline in the country. California, New York, New Jersey and the District of Columbia run to January 31; Virginia to January 29; Massachusetts to January 23. If you are in one of those places and you are working from a national deadline, you have the wrong date.

These dates are held in one place in our system, so no page on this site can disagree with another about a deadline. If a state marketplace changes its schedule, this table and every state page update together.

One caution about the federal dates

The 2027 federal schedule has been through litigation. A 2025 rule would have shortened it to November 1 – December 15; a court vacated that provision in June 2026, and the government appealed, with argument expected in late October 2026. CMS confirmed in July 2026 that the November 1 – January 15 schedule stands.

We are publishing the schedule CMS has confirmed. If the appeal changes it mid-season we will update this page and every state page the same day. Given that miscommunicating an enrollment deadline is itself a prohibited marketing practice, we would rather say this plainly than present a date as more settled than it is.

More stays open than most people think — a qualifying life event opens a 60-day window at any time of year, and Medicaid and CHIP accept applications every day. Here is the full list.

Common questions

When is Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage?

November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 on the federal marketplace. Nine jurisdictions set their own dates — check the table above for yours.

Which states have different dates?

Idaho, Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, New York, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Rhode Island and Virginia. Idaho opens earliest and closes earliest. California, New York, New Jersey and the District of Columbia run latest, to January 31. Illinois and Pennsylvania run their own marketplaces but follow the federal January 15 deadline — several national round-ups still list them as January 31 states.

What is the deadline for coverage starting January 1?

December 15, 2026 in most states. Enroll after that and coverage generally begins February 1 — except in states that close before then, where no February start exists.

Could these dates change?

The federal schedule is subject to a pending appeal with argument expected in late October 2026. CMS confirmed the current dates in July 2026. We will update this page immediately if that changes.

What if I miss Open Enrollment?

A qualifying life event — job loss, turning 26, moving, marriage, a birth, losing Medicaid — opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period at any time of year. Medicaid and CHIP have no window at all.
